Student Hall FAQ

You live in one of our student halls, but you still have some questions about living in a student hall? Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Is your question not listed? Then write to us – you can find the contact details for your file manager here.

How do I use the Internet in the student hall?

You can find information about the internet in the student hall here.

The student hall internet is not working, what do I do?

In case of any problems with the Student hall internet, please contact the 1&1 Customer Support:

(Monday to Friday, 8 am - 6 pm)

My neighbour is too loud. What should I do?

The best thing to do is to try and talk to the person first. If that doesn't help, you can ask your student hall tutor for help or contact your file manager.

I want to report a damage, how do I do that?

You can report any damage to your room or residence hall using our online damage report. All you need is your tenant number, which can be found on your tenancy agreement.

  • In the event of an emergency (such as a power or heating breakdown or a burst water pipe), please call our Emergency Service on 0561 804-2598.

Am I insured against damages in the residence?

No, residents are responsible for any damage that may occur in their rooms or apartments in the student hall. We recommend that all tenants take out personal liability insurance (in German: Private Haftpflichtversicherung) to protect themselves against any claims for damages that may arise from the tenancy agreement.

Can I move to another room?

You can move within our student halls – to another room or to an apartment. However, you must submit a removal request. You can find all the necessary information here.

I'm going away for a while, can I sublet my room?

If you are going away for a full semester, you can offer your room or apartment for subletting with our form. Find out more here.

However, you are not allowed to sublet your room/apartment privately. In fact, you risk being evicted without notice.

I have lost my key, who should I contact?

It is important that you get in touch with your file manager as soon as possible.

I have questions about living in a student hall, who can I contact?

Your student hall tutors – these are students who live in the student halls just like you and can not only answer general questions as well as give you a tip or two.

You can find out who your tutor is here.

How does waste separation work in the student halls?

Not all student halls have the same bins, so waste separation differs from student hall to student hall. You will therefore find detailed information on how to separate waste in your student hall on the notice board. If anything is unclear, it is best to ask your student hall tutor.

Do I have to pay radio and television fees in student halls?

Do I have to pay second home tax if I live in a student hall?

Both Kassel and Witzenhausen charge a tax for so called "Zweitwohnungen" (second home residences), which also applies to students living in student halls.

  • If you register your second home residence in Kassel, you must pay eight percent of your annual rent to the city of Kassel as second home tax.
  • In Witzenhausen, you can find out the exact amount of the second home tax from the city.

In both cases, however, you can save the money if you register your first home of residence.

How and when is the rent paid?

The rent is debited from your account by direct debit (SEPA-Lastschriftmandat). The direct debit will be made on the 5th of each month or, if the 5th is not a business day, on the next business day.

I can't pay my rent (on time). What should I do?

  • Be sure to contact your file manager.
  • For important reasons, a payment deferral (for a maximum of one month's rent) is possible.
  • You must request the payment deferment in writing / by e-mail to your file manager by the 15th of the previous month.
  • No more than two deferrals can be requested in any twelve-month period.

How long can I stay in a student residence?

The maximum period of residence is ten semesters. However, in cases of hardship, the residence period can be extended by up to four semesters. Please see our housing policy for more information.

I want to move out, what do I have to do?

That depends on your tenancy agreement:

  • If it is for an indefinite period, you must give written notice. Cancellations can only be made with six weeks' notice to the end of the month. (This means that the tenancy agreement always runs until the end of the month and you must give us written notice at least six weeks in advance).
  • Tenancy agreements with a fixed term end automatically - earlier termination is not possible here.

In either case, be sure to also schedule a checkout with your file manager.

I'm moving out soon, what will happen to my mail?

You should set up a forwarding order (‘Nachsendeauftrag’) to ensure that you receive the mail that is still sent to your home address after you leave. You can do this at Deutsche Post.

I'm moving out, what do I need to know about returning the room?

When you return your room, we will go through your room/apartment with you and check for any defects – this could include heavily soiled surfaces, broken furniture or other furnishings. The cost of fixing will then be deducted from your security deposit.

When will I get my deposit back?

We will transfer the deposit to your account approximately ten weeks after the end of the rental period. Important: Any costs incurred for repairs, cleaning or replacement purchases will be deducted from your deposit.
